Apparently the seven foods listed below have the ability to get you ‘high’ in varying degrees and with varying results. Who needs drugs when you have got;
1. Rye Bread
Well actually not the bread, but the ergot fungus that grows on untreated Rye. In fact the witch hunts and mass hallucinations, during the Middle Ages, were attributed to ergot infection. Ergotamine is a psychoactive compound found in ergot and has the same effects as LSD. Fortunately (according to your predilection), Rye is now inoculated against this fungus.
2. Nutmeg
Perhaps one of the easiest psychoactives to get from your local Sainsbury’s store. A good couple of tablespoons, washed down with some alcohol, will soon have you baying at the moon. Unfortunately there are side-effects; dizziness, nausea, paranoia, difficulty urinating and, the coup de grace, a hangover.
3. Sea Bream
Brain food, is fish, but the brain and head of this one will give you great problems. Psychoactive chemicals, concentrated in the head from the plankton it eats, will lead to up to 24 hours of mind-numbing hallucination called ichthyoallyeinotoxism.
ichthyoallyeinotoxism hallucinogenic fish poisoning caused by ingesting the heads or flesh of certain types of reef fishes in the tropical Pacific and Indian Oceans. The toxicity is sporadic and unpredictable in its occurrence and is not destroyed by ordinary cooking. The symptoms develop within minutes to 2 hours after ingestion, lasting up to 24 hours or more. The poison affects primarily the central nervous system. Symptoms consist of dizziness, loss of equilibrium, lack of motor co-ordination, hallucinations and mental depression. Feelings of chest constriction, of imminent death and nightmares are characteristic. No specific antidotes are known. The stomach should be immediately evacuated, other treatment is symptomatic.
4. Stilton
A 2005 study by the British Cheese Board revealed that ingesting 20 grams of Stilton cheese could lead to hallucinogenic visions. Mainly during sleep though, so if you are partial to port and stilton suppers, beware.
5. Mulberries
Eating huge amounts of unripe Mulberries can cause hallucinations. The side-effects though include a massive laxative effect, if that is your ‘bag’ then this is the one for you.
6. Poppy Seeds
Most of us already know that opium comes from poppies, poppy seeds contain minute amounts of the opium alkaloids morphine and codeine. Consumed in quantity though there are examples of people failing drugs tests, there is also the possibility of mild narcotic hallucinations.
7. Coffee
Most of us would not think of coffee as being a hallucinogenic drug, but, take the fact that 500mg of caffeine can cause hallucinations and that a standard 12 fl oz cup, as served by one of the big chains, can contain in excess of 260mg, then we have a recipe for flight! Excess consumption, though may also give you diarrhoea, convulsions and vomiting.
Now, what are you having for dinner this evening?
