You see? That is the problem, having two homes to care for.
My daughter, Heather and her husband-to-be, Gareth, have just returned from our second home in Normandy. Le Figuier (The Fig Tree) and again it is again in need of some TLC. Not only have I to finish the re-piping of the swimming pool, but also 1.8 acres to mow and a small electrical problem affecting the heating.
Nonetheless, I love our pied de terre en France.
I totally, and mean totally, relax when I am in France. My grasp of the language has helped tremendously, as has the integration into the village. Last year our mayor invited us to his inauguration, champagne and canapes, this all because we speak the language and take part in village life.
A study done by Caen University showed that 80% of English people fail within 12 months and return home, primarily because they will not or cannot learn the language. What I find amusing is that many who leave the UK for La Vie en Bleu criticise immigrants to the UK for not integrating and speaking the language.
