Of course they are, the problems began when the woolly-minded liberal brigade decide that prisoners had rights. The majority of right-minded people in the UK want to see criminals punished properly.
One thing is for certain, unless the regime is harsh then nobody will actually fear prison.
Some years ago I had the dubious pleasure of visiting Brinsford Youth Offenders Institute. I was astounded at the relaxed, nay, laid back regime. The fact that these young thugs (in the main) are given three good meals a day, have access to a gymnasium for which you and I would pay around £1K per annum to attend elsewhere and they cannot be forced to work. The Human Rights Act actually gives rights to people who take away the rights of others! A lot of the lads I spoke to were on their second visit and given the 75%+ recedivision rate its not suprising.
A lot of people tell me that a form of national service would do the job, but I am unsure, would we want (in the main) uneducated thugs running around with live ammunition? Oh! Silly me, they already do in some areas of Birmingham, Manchester and London.
Prisons must become places people really fear, harsh regimes, basic food, long hours of work and no entertainment. These criminals need to learn that the only way you get anywhere in society is by being a good citizen, working and contributing.
Politicians note.
